The active Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua is an unsuspecting site during the day but earns the title “Gate to Hell” once the sun goes down.  Below are a few tips to get the most out of this once in a lifetime experience.

1. The gates to the park don’t open until sunset and they only allow a few cars up to the volcano at a time.  So, make sure you arrive at least an hour before sunset to beat the crowd and secure your spot close to the front of the line.

2.  The best place to see the lava is by the electrical pole so power walk your way there for the best views.

3.  The best place to hear the lava, yes you can hear it bubbling, is as you walk up to the far left.  You won’t be able to see it but if you stay quiet and listen closely you’ll hear a sound resembling the ocean!
