TOP 7 REASONS TO VISIT AFRICA
My first experience with Africa was after college graduation, spending 3 months helping at a children’s home in a small town in Uganda. From the moment I landed in the country, I fell in love with hustle and bustle, food, scenery, and people of Uganda which would later lead to a love affair with many more African countries.
Upon landing, I was to be picked up by a representative from the children’s home where I would be spending my time. Due to some unforeseen circumstances (of which there are many when traveling) they weren’t there when I arrived. Armed with a phone number, but no phone, I figured I’d wait awhile and hope they showed up. About 45 minutes later, still sitting in the same spot outside of the airport, a nice gentleman came up and asked if I’d like to use his phone to call someone. He continued to let me use his pay as you go phone many times until finally my ride arrived about an hour and a half after they were expected. This was the first of many random acts of kindness I’ve experienced throughout Africa, and one of the reasons I look for ways to return and explore more countries on the continent as often as I can.
1. BEAUTIFUL CRAFTS
I dare you to visit a craft market in Africa and not at least be tempted to buy something. The colors will draw you in and the creativity will win you over.
2. ABUNDANT CULTURES
From the different styles of dress to the various traditions, after looking around and talking to the locals, you’ll learn about their rich cultures.
3. DIVERSE FOOD
With so many different influences throughout the continent, there’s a dish for everyone. Head to Namibia for lots of meat, Morocco for incredible stews cooked in a tagine, or Ethiopia for delicious vegetable and spicy meat dishes served over injera (a large sourdough flatbread).
4. INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES
There is nothing quite like a safari. To get that close to animals, living their day-to-day life, is an experience that can’t be beat. Plus, safaris aren’t your only wildlife option. You can go gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda or visit the penguins at Boulders Beach in South Africa to name a few experiences.
5. UNTOUCHED SCENERY
There’s no lack of scenery in Africa. While it varies greatly country to country, you might as well leave that book at home because you’ll be captivated looking out your window driving throughout the various regions.
6. LESS TOURISTS
We’ll just say this, France typically has 8 times more tourists per year than South Africa (approximately 10 million compared to France’s 80+ million).
7. WINE THAT IS THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW AGED
OK, the wine isn’t great throughout all of Africa, but South Africa not only has incredible wines but the wine regions are also breathtakingly beautiful. Who can complain about that?
